Modern life is based on technology and it’s frustrating when the technology doesn’t work correctly. Even with the growth in high speed internet and mobile phones we still rely on our landline phones as a means of communication, especially for businesses.
Even though landlines have been around for years they are still problematic, namely through static. Static noises are annoying. Here you will find a few ways to rid your landline of those annoying noises.
What Causes Phone Static Noise?
Static noise can be caused by numerous reasons. Below are the most common:
* Having too many phones/modems connected to one line.
* A dirty/moisture jack.
* Loose connections within the jack or phone.
Check the Possible Sources of Static Noise
Bearing the common causes of static noise in mind, the main things to check when trying to get rid of static noise are:
* The telephone jack
* The telephone
* The connections
Don’t Call the Repairman Yet!
It’s tempting to call the repairman out, but before you do try the following steps and you could save yourself a costly call-out!
Instructions (Steps):
Firstly unplug any other phones so there is only one phone connected. Check each phone one by one. If the problem is only with one phone check the connections (as detailed later).
Plug each phone back on one by one. If the noise appears after adding additional phones you may need to remove the additional phones permanently or have another line connected.
If you only have one phone try borrowing a phone from a friend or neighbour and connect that to the line in place of your phone. If the noise goes away the problem lies with your phone, which may need replacing. Also, try borrowing another phone if your phone is cordless. If the noise persists check your connections.
The most common cause of static noise is poorly or incorrectly connected equipment. Check the wires are connected correctly. Gently try to move the wires. If you hear any noise when you try to move the wires, tighten the connection to stop the wires from moving.
Check the following connections are firm and secure:
1. The cord from the handset to the phone.
2. The cord from the telephone to the jack.
3. Any connections between the jacks if you use more than one.
Try unplugging any additional devices that use the phone line. Devices such as modems, answering machines and some television receivers may share the phone line. Additional devices may cause the phone static noise, so try and remove each device one at a time and move the telephone away from any other electronic device.
If you use multiple jacks unplug any device that isn’t connected to the main jack and use the main jack to test the phone/s.
Before you open any jack and touch any of the wires unplug all telephones in the house. This will prevent any accidental grounding.
Inspect the jack. You may need to find a screwdriver to open the jack but some can be opened by simply sliding the cover to expose the insides of the jack.
Look inside the jack and check that all of the wires are secure and there are no loose or stray wires.
If the wires are loose tighten the connections to stop the wires from moving.
If there are any stray or frayed wires remove the wire from its connection, tighten the wire and replace it in the fastening, securing it tightly.
Plug in your phone and check to see it the noise is still there. If the noise persists follow the steps above again. If the noise is still there and you have checked all connections and wires there may be a problem with the jack or a problem with your phone line.
You can replace your jack by buying a new one form a hardware store. The old jack can be removed by disconnecting all the wires and unscrewing the connection holding the jack in place. Screw the new jack into place and connect all the wires into place.
If you’ve tried all the above methods and there is still static noise contact your provider as there may be problems with connections outside your home.
